Volt Slovensko Candidate Raises Concerns Over Voter Information Ahead of Regional Elections
Veronika Basta, a Volt Slovensko candidate for the Bratislava Self-Governing Region Assembly, submitted a formal complaint to the State Commission for Elections and Control of Political Party Financing on 11 October 2026. She requested an assessment of her findings concerning the publication of official candidate lists in electoral district No. 24 ahead of the elections scheduled for 24 October 2026.
Bratislava, 14 October 2026 – While putting up her election posters, Veronika Basta observed that official candidate lists for the regional assembly were absent from municipal noticeboards in Vlky, Tomášov, Malinovo and Kalinkovo. She subsequently examined the availability of candidate information on the websites of all nine municipalities in the electoral district. She documented her findings and included them in her formal submission.
Slovak electoral law requires municipalities to publish official lists of registered candidates at least 25 days before election day, using the customary means of publication in each municipality. However, the absence of a list on a particular municipal noticeboard does not automatically constitute a legal violation. Determining whether municipalities have fulfilled their statutory obligations is the responsibility of the competent authorities. The Ministry of the Interior has also made a central candidate list available in Excel format, although the candidate questions whether it is accessible to all voters.
“Fair elections are not about giving anyone an advantage. They are about ensuring that no one gains an advantage at the expense of others. That is why I felt it was important to highlight these shortcomings and request that they be examined,” said Veronika Basta, who also has experience as an election observer.
